The career opportunity
Does managing and extending global cloud platforms get your creative mind racing? Do you love building and debugging open-source, LAMP-stack architectures? Do you want to manage some of the largest sites on the planet?
Acquia is looking for a systems engineer who is passionate about the practice of DevOps to help us grow our second-to-none Acquia Cloud Enterprise and Acquia Cloud hosting services. We manage over 6,000 AWS EC2 servers powering some of the world's most popular Drupal web sites in the world. The Acquia Cloud Site Factory service is running over 35,000 web sites! This position will be supporting clients and allowing global coverage in-line with a ‘chase the sun’ ethos.
This role is based in the UK
Hours of work: Wednesday to Sunday, 8:00am-5:00 pm GMT
Key responsibilities
•Constantly improve the performance and reliability of our hosting platforms
•Debug intriguing LAMP stack problems
•Work closely with customer support and engineering to deliver second-to-none SaaS and PaaS services
•Maintain and enhance cloud management and monitoring tools
•Participate in an on-call, operations support rotation
•Capacity planning

The candidate profile
The successful candidate will be a cloud expert, utilising a deep technical understanding to ensure the deliver of a second-to-none SaaS / PaaS service and performance/reliability of Acquia’s hosting platforms. The position requires a pro-active, methodical and innovative working practice, and a candidate who will take key responsibility for Acquia’s hosting platform/delivery within the EMEA region.
Essential technical:
•Proven enterprise level Cloud hosting experience (e.g., Amazon Web Services, Eucalyptus)
•Passion for web site configuration, tuning and troubleshooting
•Deep, working knowledge of web, database, and OS server configuration (Linux, Apache, and MySQL preferred platforms)
•Holistic understanding of the Internet and hosting from the network layer up through the application layer.
•Experience in a 24x7 hosting environment
•Experience with monitoring tools, scripting, and internet security
•Monitoring tools (e.g., Nagios, Cacti, Ganglia, Splunk, Sensu, BMC, OpenView)
•Configuration management (e.g., Puppet, Chef, Subversion, Git)
•Scripting experience with PHP, Perl, Python, or Ruby
•Web security (e.g., IDS systems, DOS prevention)
•Scalable hosting cluster experience (e.g., nginx, Varnish, GlusterFS, etc.)
Commercial:
•Strong attention to detail, astute diagnostic skills, with a strategic and forward planning thought process.
•Able to guide technical discussions with both technical and non-technical audiences.
•Ability to partner with internal/external key stakeholders and negotiate mutually agreeable outcomes.
•A methodical approach to solving problems, strong leadership and project management skills.
•A passion for the web, open source development and for helping Acquia to continue to build a hot and growing global start-up.
Desirable
•Knowledge of Drupal and/or open-source technologies would be a great advantage.
•Wider commercial knowledge or experience of digital media, open source or drupal technology industry (including an appreciation of the industry structure, operating practices, business functionalities and competitive landscape).
•Acquia operates globally and therefore a second European language (preferably French or German) would be a distinct advantage but not essential.
